On this page we recommend books and authors by theme.
Our themes are quite broad, so if you’d like to search for something more specific, try using the search function at the top of the page.
You can search by genre on the Leisure page or you can search by combination of location and genre on the Travel page. On the Study page find out more about our featured subject of the month. Or click here to find the full list of Authors and Books on the site. The Author and Book list links are also on the footer of every page.
Why read fiction if you want to find out more about China? Stories can take you on a journey. As you see the dilemmas characters face and how they navigate them, you engage with their minds and emotions. Then two things happen. You build your understanding of modern China and its people. And you become familiar with a story that many Chinese people have read. With each title, you know more and you have new subjects to talk about. Plus you are entertained in the process.
The collection and this website are a work in progress. We’d like to hear from you. Which themes would you like us to contextualise with books?
